What role does UL 6200 play in the safety of power distribution systems? Five questions for our energy expert

UL 6200 is an important standard for electronic control and regulation devices in energy automation. Compliance with this standard ensures protection against electrical hazards, improves product quality and reliability, as well as helps to meet regulatory requirements. B&R control systems for generators used in power generation plants have been UL 6200-certified. We spoke to David Venhorst, who is responsible for the energy industry at B&R.

Mr. Venhorst, can you explain why this certification is so important for B&R customers?

David Venhorst: UL 6200 certification is very important to us since it verifies the safety and reliability of our control systems for generators used in power generation plants. This is particularly important for the US and Canadian markets, where strict standards apply and certification is a prerequisite. B&R is one of the first suppliers to offer this new standard. This is proof of our commitment to the highest standards in energy automation.

And how does this standard fit with the diverse areas of power generation in which B&R is active?

Venhorst: Our certified systems can be used for a wide range of applications, from wind energy and biogas to Power-to-X systems. They play a key role in safe, efficient energy generation and therefore meet the high demands of our customers.

Can you give an example of how your technology improves efficiency in one of these areas?

Venhorst: One example is its use in hydrogen-powered combustion engines. Our control systems optimize the generators, which enables safe and efficient energy generation. This not only increases operational safety, but also minimizes the CO2 footprint. This way, we are helping to ensure that backup solutions also meet today's requirements for sustainability and reliability.

What does the future of energy automation look like, particularly with regard to UL 6200 certification?

Venhorst: The future of energy automation holds great promise. We are seeing a trend towards even smarter and safer systems that support the transition to sustainable energy. UL 6200 will play a key role, since it stands for trust and safety in the industry. At B&R, we strive to not only meet, but exceed this standard to make power generation safer and more efficient worldwide.

And finally, what is the role of electrolyzers and battery storage systems in your projects?

Venhorst: Although the UL 6200 standard refers specifically to controlling generators, we also offer comprehensive solutions for automating electrolyzers and battery storage systems. These are crucial for the storage of renewable energy and the production of green hydrogen. They are therefore an essential part of our projects. Our expertise in these areas complements our range of products and enables us to provide integrated energy solutions.

Thank you for sharing your insights with us.

Infobox

  • UL 6200 is an important standard in energy automation and refers to requirements and safety tests for electronic control devices in energy distribution systems. It specifies the safety requirements for electronic devices used in power distribution systems, which include protection against electric shocks, fire hazards and mechanical damage.
  • Power-to-X (or P2X) is a strategic approach to converting surplus electricity from renewable energies into stable forms of energy. These technologies play an important role in the transition to sustainable energy, since they make it possible to store surplus renewable energy and convert it into usable power sources. B&R offers comprehensive P2X solutions.
  • Electrolyzers play a central role in P2X solutions through the efficient production of hydrogen, which is used as a storage medium in industry. Supplemented by advanced water treatment and air separation processes, P2X systems enable sustainable energy storage and supply. These technologies are fundamental building blocks required to meet the demand for clean energy and reduce or eliminate carbon emissions in the future.
